What is CMMI Maturity Level 5?

CMMI Maturity Level 5, Optimizing, is the highest rating in the CMMI model. It is awarded to organisations that set quantitative objectives for quality and process performance, understand the variation in their processes, and choose and confirm improvements using data.

Level 5 builds on the high maturity practices first required at Level 4, Quantitatively Managed, such as process performance baselines and models. Appraisals use the CMMI Institute's Benchmark method under CMMI V3.0 and must be led by a lead appraiser certified by the CMMI Institute for high maturity appraisals.

The result is a maturity level rating for the appraised organisational unit, published on the Published Appraisal Results System (PARS) and valid for three years. Because high maturity claims attract close attention from buyers, the appraisal looks hard at whether the statistics are used to make real decisions.

Who it is for

  • Large software and IT services organisations already rated at Level 3
  • Global delivery centres competing for long-term outsourcing contracts
  • Engineering organisations with mature measurement programmes
  • Suppliers to buyers in aerospace, defence or financial services that ask for high maturity
  • Managed service providers running high-volume, repeatable services

What sets audit time and cost

The Benchmark appraisal itself typically takes one to two weeks; organisations need enough stable process data to support baselines and models, so readiness reviews usually start many months ahead.

  • Size of the organisational unit and number of projects or services
  • Model views in scope
  • Volume and quality of process performance data to review
  • Number of locations and delivery centres
  • Appraisal team size and duration
  • Readiness reviews of high maturity practices before the appraisal

Why it matters

What CMMI Maturity Level 5 gives you

  1. 01

    The highest published rating

A Level 5 result on PARS signals to buyers that delivery is managed quantitatively, not only by procedure.

  2. 02

    Predictable performance

Process performance baselines and models let you forecast quality and schedule outcomes with known confidence.

  3. 03

    Improvements backed by data

Changes are selected and checked against measured results, so effort goes into improvements that work.

  4. 04

    Fewer repeated problems

Causal analysis addresses the root causes of defects and problems so they do not recur across projects.

The audit

What our auditors examine

  1. 01

    Quality and process performance objectives

Measurable objectives derived from business needs, and how projects set and track their own objectives against them.

  2. 02

    Process performance baselines and models

Whether baselines rest on sound data, how variation is understood, and whether models are used to predict outcomes.

  3. 03

    Statistical management of subprocesses

Use of statistical techniques to monitor selected subprocesses and act when performance falls outside expected limits.

  4. 04

    Causal analysis and resolution

How root causes of significant defects and outcomes are analysed, and how the resulting changes are evaluated.

  5. 05

    Selecting and deploying improvements

How improvement proposals are chosen, piloted, rolled out and measured across the organisational unit.

  6. 06

    Level 3 foundations

Continued evidence that defined processes, training and quality assurance remain in place beneath the high maturity practices.

How the appraisal runs

Benchmark appraisals follow the CMMI Institute’s method, led by a certified lead appraiser.

  1. 01

    Planning

The lead appraiser agrees the model, maturity level, organisational unit and sampled projects with your appraisal sponsor.

  2. 02

    Readiness review

A readiness review checks that evidence and participants are in place before the appraisal is scheduled.

  3. 03

    Benchmark appraisal

The appraisal team examines evidence and interviews practitioners across the sampled work to rate practice areas.

  4. 04

    Results

The maturity level rating is presented to the sponsor and submitted to the CMMI Institute, which publishes it on its results system.
