What is ISO 55001?

ISO 55001 specifies requirements for an asset management system: the way an organisation turns its objectives into decisions about acquiring, operating, maintaining, renewing and disposing of assets. The aim is to realise value from assets while balancing cost, risk and performance over their life.

Central elements are the strategic asset management plan (SAMP), which links organisational objectives to asset management objectives, the asset management plans that follow from it, life cycle decision making and the information the organisation needs about its assets. ISO 55000 provides the overview and vocabulary, and ISO 55002 gives guidance on applying ISO 55001.

Our certificates reference ISO 55001:2014. A revised edition has since been published; at quotation we confirm which edition your audit uses and how any transition affects your cycle.

Who it is for

  • Water, power and gas network utilities
  • Rail, road, port and airport operators
  • Municipal and public infrastructure owners
  • Asset-intensive manufacturers and process plants
  • Renewable energy operators
  • Owners of large property portfolios

What sets audit time and cost

Application to certification decision typically takes twelve to sixteen weeks, as Stage 2 samples asset portfolios and field operations across the scope.

  • Number of personnel in scope
  • Size and diversity of the asset portfolio
  • Geographical spread of assets and depots
  • Extent of outsourced maintenance and operation
  • Maturity of asset information systems

Why it matters

What ISO 55001 gives you

  1. 01

    Investment decisions justified

Renewal and maintenance spending is traced to objectives and risk, which supports regulators, boards and funders.

  2. 02

    Lower whole-life cost

Life cycle decision making balances capital and operating costs instead of minimising one at the expense of the other.

  3. 03

    Better asset information

Defined information requirements improve the quality of data behind maintenance and investment plans.

  4. 04

    Risk to service understood

Asset risks are linked to the service outcomes they threaten, so attention goes to the assets that matter most.

The audit

What our auditors examine

  1. 01

    Strategic asset management plan

How organisational objectives are translated into asset management objectives and the approach to achieving them.

  2. 02

    Asset management plans

Plans for asset portfolios, with activities, resources, timescales and financial implications.

  3. 03

    Risk and life cycle decisions

Criteria for decisions on acquisition, maintenance, renewal and disposal, and how asset risk is assessed.

  4. 04

    Asset information

Information requirements, data quality and the systems used to hold asset data.

  5. 05

    Outsourced activities

Control of contractors who maintain or operate assets, and how knowledge is retained.

  6. 06

    Asset performance

Monitoring of asset and system performance, and investigation of asset failures and incidents.

How certification works

Every accredited certificate follows the same three-year cycle, with each step recorded and the result published in our register.

  1. 01

    Application and quote

Tell us your scope, sites and headcount. We calculate audit time under the accreditation rules and send a fixed quote and audit plan.

  2. 02

    Stage 1 audit

We review your documented management system, scope and readiness, and agree the Stage 2 plan. Any gaps are reported so you can close them first.

  3. 03

    Stage 2 audit

Auditors check that the system works in practice: interviews, records and observation across the scope. Nonconformities are raised in writing.

  4. 04

    Certification decision

Once corrective actions are accepted, a reviewer who did not take part in the audit makes the decision. Your certificate is issued and listed in the public register.

  5. 05

    Surveillance audits

Shorter audits in the first and second years after certification confirm the system is maintained and improving. The register shows your current status throughout.

  6. 06

    Recertification

Before the three-year certificate expires, a recertification audit reviews the whole system and renews the certificate for another cycle.

We audit; we do not consult.

To keep certification independent, we never design, build or fix the systems we audit, and decisions are made by people who did not take part in the audit. Read our impartiality policy.
